Cover book from San Juan: the city that grew beyon its walls

The National Park Service, in partnership with the Puerto Rico Academy of History, and thanks to the collaboration of the Centro de Investigaciones Históricas, the Department of History at the College of Humanities of the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus, the Escuela de Artes Plásticas, and the Fundación Puertorriqueña de las Humanidades, is proud to present the publication of the Catalogue complementing the exhibition San Juan: the City that Grew Beyond its Walls. The exhibition narrates the development of San Juan as a garrison city, the pro­cess of the demolition of its walls, and the emergence of the Puerta de Tierra neighborhood and the various typologies of the structures that were authorized there, as well as its working class nature.

These topics are addressed in papers by Milagros Flores, Luis E. González-Vales, Aníbal Sepúlveda and Silvia álvarez-Curbelo, and by Arturo Bird-Carmona. This exhibition catalog includes these papers and constitutes a valuable contribution to the study of the barrio Puerta de Tierra.

To a great measure the documentary sources that were used came from documents related to Puerto Rico held at the Archivo General Militar in Madrid. Copies of this valuable collection have been deposited at several archives, research centers and libraries, as well as local universities, which facilitates its use by local researchers.

These texts are a good measure of the wealth of this documentation.
